Instruments of Change

An exhibition of objects telling the story of innovation, change and discovery across 200 years of healthcare, research, and medical education in Manchester.

‌The Instruments of Change exhibition explores patient care and policy development in an emerging National Health Service (NHS) in the mid-20th century.

A display of around 30 medical artefacts invite visitors to examine innovations which took place in Manchester and how they have influenced patient care.

  • Find out how a professor of anatomy helped to shape the outcome of the Second World War through research into penicillin.
  • Discover the University’s role in evolving the patient experience for children in hospital.
  • Look back in time to when medical education in the city was in its infancy.
