About

The Museum of Medicine and Health contains one of the most extensive collections of medical instruments and equipment in England.

‌‌Spanning more than 300 years, the collection represents a significant educational and cultural asset for the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health at The University of Manchester.

The Museum collection is under the stewardship of the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHSTM), with Professor Carsten Timmermann as Academic Lead.

Our activities

Through access and engagement, we support the University community to enable, enhance and widen their research, teaching, student experience and public engagement to inspire and inform.

We act as a unique resource for placing science in a social and historical context through the University’s regional, national and international reach.

We manage and care for key medical objects, acting as a custodian for the public benefit as part of the Faculty’s social responsibility agenda. The Museum of Medicine and Health is part of the University’s heritage and the University collections.

Accessing the collection

The Museum has a permanent display in the Foyer of the Stopford Building, showcasing just some of our medical artefacts.

Objects are often loaned to other museums and educational institutions. See current events.
